Character name: Sally Michelle Ross
Canon: OC, based on the DWRP [community profile] konran
Age: 33
Gender: female

Abilities & skills: Sally studied and practiced criminal law for many years, first training to be a lawyer and now residing as a court judge. As such she is not only knowledgeable in the field, but she also is skilled in knowing what to look for in contracts and legal documents. Since she studied in China, she also had to learn Chinese as a second language, and is now fluent in it. Korean is also spoken in her home town, but she isn't as fluent in it.

Personality: Sally is a passionate woman. When she knows what she wants, she strives to get it in every way possible. She takes her work seriously and puts her all into it. She doesn't like blood or guns, but she stomachs the sight of them for the sake of her job. While not the most physically intimidating person, she is excellent with words, and she can read a person fairly easily, making her a force to be reckoned with in the courthouse, and sometimes even in her everyday life.

Outside of her work, Sally is courteous and friendly with a good sense of humor and even a little of a mischievous side. She enjoys socializing with small groups in a relaxed setting, but she is also perfectly comfortable by herself. She enjoys reading and classical music, and is most relaxed in a quiet corner with a good book. However, even then it can sometimes be difficult to turn her work brain off, as it were. She is extremely goal-oriented and tends to bury herself in work when she has a project, often to the point of forgetting to sleep or even take a break.

In recent times, it's rarer to see her stronger traits; a terrorist attack in her home town has inflicted her with post-traumatic stress. Anxiety, panic attacks, and entire inability to concentrate have made it difficult for her to live her everyday life from before the incident. Not that being away from work altogether has eased her mind either. However, anyone who knew her before knows she's a tough woman and is confident that she'll be able to pull through and return to her normal life.

revision 7/13/14: Sally is a passionate, hard-working bookworm. Growing up with her reclusive, depressed father, things often didn't get done around the house unless she did them herself, so she grew used to being the one to take initiative early on, and it's a trait that never left her. She's quick to take charge of a situation, and when she wants something, she does everything in her power to get it. She's a perfectionist, working hard on any project that comes her way, often to the point of forgetting to eat or sleep if someone doesn't interrupt her. Her love of reading drove her to learning a lot about history, and that along with growing up during the latter half of the Cold War taught her the injustices of the world, which was what ultimately inspired her to practice law.

Sally is polite and well-spoken, as well as compassionate and empathetic. Sometimes a little too empathetic - her job as a criminal court judge can be difficult to stomach on some days, as she doesn't like blood or violence, and she is required to be objective; even violent criminals have their side to the story. But what ultimately pushes her through it is knowing that she is helping people. Just one 'thank you' from someone for putting their attacker in prison is enough to make the hardship worth it.

Outside of the courtroom, Sally is fairly introverted, completely content with spending the night quietly by herself or with her fiance Robert with a good book. But when she's with company she is friendly and has a good sense of humor, and even a slight mischievous side; naughty jokes are common on a girls' night out. However she may pass the time however, it can be difficult for her to turn her work brain off, as it were, and conversation about a case from that morning or rambling about the work she has to do when she gets home can sometimes take over her mouth.

If one were to ask why she ended up settling with Rob, she wouldn't really have an answer for you except that it 'just sort of happened.' It may have been a case of opposites attracting; while Sally is so goal-oriented and focused primarily on accomplishments, Rob is more about balancing work and play. He often pulls Sally away from work when she's burning herself out or not taking care of herself, yet at the same time he encourages everything she does, and on days when the job is especially harrowing, he's the one who pushes her forward and reminds her why she went into it. They are not entirely unalike of course; Rob has his own goals that he strives for, albeit ones that need time and energy he wants to be sure he has first, and his own nurturing nature can sometimes gets him carrying too much on his shoulders himself.

Tragically, Sally currently suffers from post-traumatic stress due to a terrorist attack she was caught in the middle of. Her work has since been exceedingly stressful and triggered several panic attacks, especially violent cases, sometimes even trials against the perpetrators of the attacks, and her inability to cope or even concentrate has deemed her mentally unfit to work until further notice. Unfortunately, the treatment may be worse than the sickness in this regard; being out of work has shattered her confidence - if she can't do what she loves anymore, then what is she supposed to do? - and without her job to give her focus, anxiety and flashbacks to the event are more common as her mind wanders. She's found herself relying on Rob more than either of them could foresee, be it talking her through a panic attack or simply offering a shoulder to lean on. Since Sally was so self-reliant before, this is extremely frustrating for her and she tends to feel helpless, yet at the same time she's extremely grateful that she has him to help her.

AU history: Sally was raised in a small town in Minnesota by a single father, after her mother died when she was about a year old. Growing up, she was tomboyish and reclusive, preferring her books and studies over human interaction. She had an awkward relationship with her father, who didn't really know how to talk to her by himself; their conversations were always laconic and on the same subjects of school and daily tasks. They had their fights, once in a while, but Sally was the one who did all the yelling in them. It wasn't until she started college that she attempted to get back in touch with him, and even then efforts to connect have been shaky.

After graduating with honors from high school, Sally moved to Hunluan, a British-Chinese city on the edge of the Shantung Peninsula, where she attended Teimei University, studying criminal law to become a lawyer. Once again she focused nearly all of her energy into studying, only occasionally coming out to spend time with a study group. Then in her last term, while out grocery shopping, her tail light was knocked out by a man named Robert Robinson. Neither of them were hurt and he was extremely apologetic, and while they exchanged insurance they ended up talking at length and he gave her his phone number. They didn't get back in touch for some time while Sally got mired in work for midterms, but nearing the end of the semester she found his number again and they went out for dinner. It turned out he was going to the same college, majoring in finances. One date turned into him occasionally knocking on her door and dragging her out for some sunshine when she was studying too hard, and by the time finals rolled around their friends were joking about when they'd be getting married.

There were no marriage plans in the near future, of course, but the two were seeing each other seriously long after they both graduated and took to the working world. Rob settled as an accountant, while Sally slowly but surely came to be a well respected lawyer. From there she was encouraged to go even further and run for judge. She got elected shortly after she and Rob decided to move in together. Life went on normally and peacefully for three years, but then one December afternoon, disaster struck.

For many years unrest had arisen in Hunluan; since the city was given to China by Britain in the late 80s, a band of freedom fighters called the Hunluan Independence Movement, or HIM, had been protesting, especially against chief executive Jinan Jin. For a time they were harmless, merely passing out fliers and spreading propaganda. But in the winter of 1993 they decided to show how serious they were and detonated a stolen neutron bomb in the center of town. It failed to reach full fusion, but it did cause an explosion that devastated the area. Sally was severely injured in the blast, and that along with the resulting radiation that did occur caused the judge to slip into a coma. It was a year before she awoke, after most of the damage was cleaned up, though the area was still quarantined. She could swear she had a nightmare about waking up as somebody else who didn't believe anything about her life, and she was visibly shaken by the attack.

Sally's work suffered after that. PTSD struck hard, making it nearly impossible to even get through a few hours of work before having a panic attack or just collapsing into tears, especially when a lot of cases of late were relating to the explosion. She had insisted that she could handle it, but as time went on it was more and more obvious that she wasn't fit to work and was forced to take a long leave of absence. One silver lining was her new engagement to Rob, but they both knew that between her mental health, being out of work and the bills for her recovery, they wouldn't be getting married for a good long while.

Third or first person sample: The sky was barely a tint of pink on the horizon. Sally leaned her elbow on the back of the couch as she stared out the window watching the sun rise, resting her chin on her hand and gnawing lightly on her pinkie finger. The book she had been reading lay forgotten in her lap. Well, reading in the loosest form of the word - she must have flipped twenty pages over and she wouldn't even be able to tell you the protagonist's name.

She didn't know how long she sat in silence before she was startled by a hand on her shoulder and looked up to see Rob standing beside her. He tried to smile a tired, worried smile as he sat down next to her.

"It's still early for your flight, isn't it?" he asked. Sally sighed softly, rubbing at her eyes which now started to irritate her.

"I couldn't sleep."

Rob wordlessly coaxed her toward him, letting her lean on his shoulder while he rested his head on hers, lightly stroking the side of her neck. She let her eyes wander silently as they cuddled, first toward the doorway where her luggage was ready, then down to the plane ticket she had been using as a bookmark. She let out another tired sigh.

"Why did I ever agree to this? I've never even heard of this InGen company...I never asked for a vacation, let alone by myself on the other side of the globe!"

"Maybe a change of scenery could be a good thing," said Rob, "You've barely even left the apartment since the incident."

Sally frowned slightly.

"That's what my therapist said, too. That maybe if I took time to relax I could look toward going back to work. But how can I relax when I can't even work like I used to?"

"Hey, hey listen to me." Rob lightly pushed Sally up by the shoulders, encouraging her to look at him.

"One step at a time, okay? I know it's hard, but if you worry too much about whether it's going to help it won't anyway. It's just for a few weeks. You can do it. Maybe you'll have so much fun you won't even notice the time, like you always do when you're caught up in something."

Sally's eyes wandered to her hands resting in her lap, running her fingers along the edge of the ticket.

"I just wish you could come with me."

"Me too..." Rob said softly, letting his hand rest on her arm and giving it a comforting squeeze.

"But listen. If you ever feel like you can't handle it out there, I want you to call me. Even if it's the middle of the night my time - even if I'm at work. Call me any time you need me, okay?"

Sally was quiet a moment, before a small smirk went across her lips.

"You think they'll cover that much long distance?"

Rob just smiled back, satisfied to see her smiling again herself.

"If not, I think we'll get by."
